What is MatchIQ?
MatchIQ is MatMetrics' match prediction and strategy tool. It analyzes two wrestlers' complete match histories, Elo ratings, and wrestling styles to provide win probability predictions and tactical recommendations.
Whether you're a coach preparing for a dual meet, a wrestler scouting an opponent, or a parent trying to understand a matchup, MatchIQ gives you data-driven insights that go beyond simple win-loss records.
MatchIQ Provides:
- β Win probability percentages for each wrestler
- β Head-to-head history (if they've faced each other)
- β Archetype matchup analysis
- β Position choice recommendations
- β Strategic advice tailored to both wrestlers' styles
How to Use MatchIQ
Step 1: Select Wrestler 1
Start typing a wrestler's name in the first search box. As you type, suggestions will appear. Click on a wrestler to select them. You'll see their record, Elo rating, and archetype displayed.
Step 2: Select Wrestler 2
Repeat the process for the second wrestler. This is typically the opponent you're scouting against.
Step 3: View Prediction
Once both wrestlers are selected, MatchIQ automatically calculates the prediction. You'll see win probabilities, archetype matchup analysis, and strategic recommendations.
Understanding Predictions
Win Probability
The win probability is calculated using both wrestlers' Elo ratings. This is the same formula used in chess and other competitive sports. The percentages always add up to 100%.
Archetype Matchups
MatchIQ considers how different wrestling styles interact. Some archetypes have natural advantages against others:
- Offensive wrestlers often overwhelm Defensive wrestlers with constant attacks
- Technical wrestlers can exploit Offensive wrestlers' over-aggression
- Scramblers thrive against Technical wrestlers who prefer controlled exchanges
- Grinders wear down Scramblers with relentless pressure
- Complete wrestlers adapt to any style but may lack specialized advantages
Position Choice Advisor
When you win the coin toss before the 2nd or 3rd period, you get to choose your starting position: neutral, top (referee's position on top), bottom (referee's position on bottom), or defer.
MatchIQ recommends a position based on both wrestlers' styles and tendencies:
Choose Neutral When:
- β’ You have a strong neutral game (lots of takedowns)
- β’ Your opponent is dangerous on top
- β’ You're an Offensive or Technical archetype
Choose Top When:
- β’ You have a strong riding game or tilts
- β’ Your opponent struggles to escape
- β’ You're a Grinder archetype
Choose Bottom When:
- β’ You have quick escapes or reversals
- β’ Your opponent is weak on top
- β’ You want to return to neutral quickly
Defer When:
- β’ You want to save your choice for the 3rd period
- β’ You want to see what your opponent chooses first
- β’ Match situation could change significantly
Strategic Advice
MatchIQ provides personalized strategic recommendations based on the specific matchup. This advice considers both wrestlers' strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies.
Example Strategic Advice:
Against an Offensive wrestler: "Don't get drawn into their pace. Focus on hand-fighting and controlling ties. They want chaosβdeny it."
Against a Defensive wrestler: "Be patient with your attacks. Set up your shots rather than forcing them. They're waiting for you to overcommit."
Against a Scrambler: "Stay in good position. When things get messy, focus on hips and head position rather than reaching for holds."
Tips for Best Results
Check Multiple Weight Classes
Some wrestlers compete at multiple weights. Make sure you're selecting the right version of your opponent for the most accurate prediction.
Consider Recent Form
Elo ratings are updated after each match, but check recent match history too. A wrestler might be on a hot streak or coming off an injury.
Use with Video
MatchIQ is a starting point, not a replacement for watching film. Use the predictions to focus your video study on specific situations.
Remember: It's Not Destiny
A 70% win probability means the favored wrestler wins 7 out of 10 timesβbut upsets happen! Use the data to prepare, not to predetermine outcomes.
