Wrestling Positions
Understanding neutral, top, bottom, and the referee's position.
In This Guide
β‘ Quick Reference
Neutral Position
The neutral position is when both wrestlers are standing and facing each other, with neither having control. This is the starting position for every match and for the first period.
When You're in Neutral:
- β Match starts (both wrestlers on their feet)
- β After going out of bounds
- β After the referee stops action and no one has control
- β When a wrestler chooses "neutral" after winning the coin toss
Key Neutral Skills
Offensive
- β’ Shots (single leg, double leg, high crotch)
- β’ Throws and trips
- β’ Snap downs
- β’ Arm drags
Defensive
- β’ Sprawling
- β’ Hand fighting
- β’ Counter wrestling
- β’ Circle movement
Referee's Position
The referee's position is the starting position used at the beginning of the 2nd and 3rd periods (when a wrestler chooses top or bottom). One wrestler is on their hands and knees (bottom), and the other is in a controlling position behind them (top).
π Setup
Bottom wrestler:
- β’ Hands on the mat (palms down)
- β’ Knees on the mat
- β’ Head up, looking forward
Top wrestler:
- β’ One arm around bottom wrestler's waist
- β’ Other hand on bottom wrestler's elbow
- β’ One knee on mat, one foot up
Top Position
Being on top means you have control over your opponent and are trying to keep them down, turn them for back points, or work toward a pin.
Goals When on Top:
- π― Control: Keep your opponent from escaping
- π Turns: Get their back exposed to the mat
- π Pin: Hold both shoulders down for 2 seconds
- β±οΈ Riding Time: Accumulate control time (1 point if you lead by 1+ minute)
Common Top Techniques
Half Nelson
Arm goes under opponent's armpit, hand on back of their head. Used to turn them.
Tight Waist
Arm locked tight around their waist. Used to control and set up other moves.
Leg Riding
Hooking your leg inside their leg for control. Advanced technique.
Cradle
Locking their head and leg together. Can lead to pin or near fall.
Bottom Position
Being on bottom means you're trying to escape (stand up and face your opponent) or reverse (go from bottom to top and gain control).
Goals When on Bottom:
- π Escape (1 point): Get to your feet and face your opponent
- π Reversal (2 points): Go from bottom to controlling top
- β‘ Return to Neutral: Get back to your preferred position
Common Bottom Techniques
Stand Up
Most fundamental escape. Explode to your feet, hand fight, turn to face opponent.
Sit Out
Kick legs forward, sit to your hip, turn to face opponent.
Switch
Clear their arm, go behind them. Creates a reversal.
Granby Roll
Rolling escape. Advanced technique that can create reversals.
Choosing Your Position
Before the 2nd and 3rd periods, a coin toss determines who chooses first. The winner can pick neutral, top, bottom, or defer (let opponent choose first, you choose second).
Choose Neutral When:
- β’ You have a strong takedown game
- β’ Your opponent is dangerous on top
- β’ You're winning and want to control pace
- β’ You're an Offensive or Technical archetype
Choose Top When:
- β’ You have a strong riding game
- β’ Your opponent struggles to escape
- β’ You need riding time points
- β’ You're a Grinder archetype
Choose Bottom When:
- β’ You have quick escapes
- β’ Your opponent is weak on top
- β’ You want to return to neutral quickly
- β’ You need to score quickly
Defer When:
- β’ You want to save your choice for the 3rd period
- β’ The match situation might change
- β’ You want information (see what they choose)
Position Strategies by Archetype
π₯ Offensive Wrestlers
Prefer neutral to score takedowns. On top, look for tilts and pins. On bottom, escape quickly to get back to feet.
π― Technical Wrestlers
Adaptable to any position. Make precise moves from anywhere. Control the pace.
π‘οΈ Defensive Wrestlers
Good at escaping from bottom. Strong at preventing takedowns in neutral. Counter wrestling.
β‘ Scramblers
Thrive in chaotic situations. Can escape from anywhere. Create scrambles on bottom.
πͺ Grinders
Excel on top with riding. Wear opponents down. Accumulate riding time.
