Southern Plains Day 1 Recap: 632 Greco Matches, 5 Champions Crowned, and the First Road-to-Fargo Spots Clinched

Day 1 of the 2026 Southern Plains Regional Championships is in the books, and the Oklahoma City Convention Center delivered exactly what the registration numbers promised: chaos, upsets, and a lot of wrestling. Across four Greco-Roman divisions — 16U Boys, 16U Girls, Junior Boys, and Junior Girls — 632 matches were completed with over 530 wrestlers stepping on the mat. The action ran from opening bouts through late-evening consolation rounds, and by the time the lights dimmed, five champions had already been crowned.

The finishing rate was staggering. Technical falls accounted for 57.4% of all outcomes — 363 matches ended by tech. Falls made up another 32.4% with 205 pins. Only 46 matches (7.3%) went to a decision. In Greco-Roman, that ratio is typical at the regional level, where the skill gaps between seeded and unseeded wrestlers tend to show early. But it also means the matchups tighten fast as brackets narrow.

The Junior Boys Greco division pushed the furthest, reaching semifinals in most weight classes and crowning one champion: Xzander Donner took the Junior GR 113 title over Rowdy Angst in a decision (9-9 on criteria). The 16U Boys brackets completed through quarterfinals in most weights, with the Round of 32 and Round of 16 fully wrestled. The consolation side is just getting started — Consi Round 2 matches are pending across the 16U Boys field, meaning the wrestleback bracket will be the story of Day 2's Greco session.

The girls divisions moved fast. Junior Girls Greco crowned two champions: Emma Faczak won Junior Girls GR 110 by fall over Janie Gerarde, and Tayla Skelley edged Jaelyn Skelley in a 10-4 decision at Junior Girls GR 130-135 — a family affair at the finals level. On the 16U Girls side, cameron hodge won 16U Girls GR 105 by tech fall (8-0) over Kaydence O'Neil-Dreher, and Chloe Medlock dominated 16U Girls GR 115 with a 9-0 tech fall over Miyah Thompson. The 16U Girls brackets ran all the way through finals in multiple weights.

The top-rated wrestlers in the field largely held serve. Ki'Morah Cathey (2541 rating) and Lazarus McEwen (2504) both won their Day 1 matches, as did Emily Beckley (2490), Emma Faczak (2461), Kyrstan Perez (2439), and Lewis Davis (2420). The depth of talent from Oklahoma (106 wrestlers who competed), Texas (63), Missouri (54), Colorado (45), and Kansas (35) showed in competitive early-round matchups — even first-round consolation bouts featured wrestlers who had clearly trained for Greco specifically.

Day 2 starts with the final Greco session, where the remaining 16U Boys and Junior Boys brackets will wrestle to conclusion. Greco champions will be crowned across all 17 boys weight classes. Then the tournament pivots to Freestyle, with weigh-ins and the first Freestyle sessions beginning in the afternoon.
