Southern Plains Day 2 Recap: Greco-Roman Finals Complete, Freestyle Session 1 Underway

Day 2 of the 2026 Southern Plains Regional Championships brought Greco-Roman to a close and kicked off Freestyle at the Oklahoma City Convention Center. Across two sessions, 297 Greco matches were completed — bringing the two-day Greco total to 929 matches — and 19 champions were crowned across 16U Boys, 16U Girls, Junior Boys, and Junior Girls divisions. The finishing rate held steady: 56.6% technical falls, 27.4% pins, and only 12.3% of matches going to a decision.

The Junior Boys Greco division crowned nine champions. Dylan Ota took the Junior GR 120 title over Lazarus McEwen — one of the highest-rated wrestlers in the field at 2504 — in a 5-5 criteria decision. Van Smith dominated Junior GR 132 with a 12-2 tech fall over JR Ortega, and Daniel Acosta (2361 rating) won Junior GR 165 by fall. Tyler Yancey (2359) edged Cody Trevino 7-5 at Junior GR 144 in a matchup between two of the tournament's top-rated wrestlers. Aiden Jalajel ran through Junior GR 126 with a 13-2 tech fall in the finals, and Garrison Sartain took Junior GR 150 with a 1-4 decision.

The 16U Boys Greco side crowned champions across all weight classes. Ryatt Rodden (2438 rating) lived up to his billing at 16U GR 132 with an 11-3 tech fall in the finals over Avery Rios. Lewis Davis (2420) dominated 16U GR 138, and Zachary Donalson won 16U GR 120 by tech fall 8-0. Henry Scott McDoniel powered through 16U GR 150 with wins by fall and an 11-6 decision over Michael Alexander in the finals. Drake Sheffield's 4-3 decision at 16U GR 144 was the tightest boys final of the day. Brady Knadler took 16U GR 113 and Dresden Beard won 16U GR 190 — both by tech fall.

The girls divisions had largely wrapped up on Day 1, with Emma Faczak (2461 rating, Junior Girls GR 110), Chloe Medlock (2346, 16U Girls GR 115), cameron hodge (16U Girls GR 105), and Tayla Skelley (Junior Girls GR 130-135) taking home titles. Several 16U Girls and Junior Girls brackets still have consolation rounds to complete.

Saturday afternoon marked the pivot to Freestyle. Session 1 got underway with early rounds across multiple divisions, and session 2 continues Sunday to wrestle Freestyle to completion. The Junior Freestyle division alone has 420 registered wrestlers — the deepest bracket at the tournament. The top-six finishers in 16U and Junior divisions in each style earn automatic qualification for the 52nd Annual USA Wrestling Junior and 16U National Championships in Fargo this July.
